The Bridge - Friday Night
The sun is down and traffic is hardly moving at all.
I went down to the road and a Phishhead was sitting in
a folding chair saying he'd been there for about a
half hour. Evidentally it is so muddy at the site that
they are hauling cars to their parking spot by tractor.
This bit of information manages to unnerve Emma (not our
daughter, a Phishhead from Burlington) and her friend.
Emma the Phishhead comes up the driveway and asks
me if they can park their car here in the fields.
She doesn't want to get her low slung Lexus stuck in the
mud or hauled to some ungodly final resting place where
she'll never get out, and anyway they've got to be back
to Burlington by Sunday night, and we'll pay you of course
and yes I know it's a 6 mile walk from here in the pouring
rain, but we'll survive, Pretty Please?
This question slightly unnerves me. 2 weeks ago I was
having fantasies of offering parking spots in the field
for 10 bucks a night as a way of contributing to the
economic windfall to the Northeast Kingdom for which this
spectacle is supposed to be. Now I'm having nightmares
about waking up tomorrow morning to see our driveway
littered with Volvos and VW microbusses parked helter skelter
as other Phishheads decide that this "Park and 6-Mile Walk"
thing is a good idea for them too.
I run back to the house leaving Emma and friend in the dark
at the bottom of the driveway contemplating their collective
fate. A quick managerial meeting with Karen in the bathroom
as she gives Rosa a bath and we decide after much soul
searching that it's going to be OK. Emma can park. For free.
I go back down and give Emma the good news. Much rejoicing.

2 More happy Phishheads on their way to the airport
However it's not all gloom and doom as the hours roll on
and the rain continues to pour down. In fact what else can
you say about Phishheads in general except that they are
happy, and content to be on their way (however slowly) to
their final rendezvous with their heroes on stage tomorrow
night. They know they'll get there. So in the meantime
the party is where ever they happen to be parked, or under
whatever tarp happens to be setup along the road, or next to
whatever huge lighted peace sign happens to be hanging from
the side of the nearest barn.

Peace and more good vibes in the rain from Framingham, Mass.
