About

Cumberland Valley Township Historical Society was organized in September 2006 and had its first public viewing of exhibits in the old Cumberland Valley Township School in September 2007. In the spring of 2008, we were granted 501(c)(3) status, making us a nonprofit organization.

The Society’s main goal is the rebuilding of the covered bridge over Evitts Creek. While working towards that goal, the Society members have been collecting and documenting many historical facts about the township.

Since their beginning, the Society has seen the dedication of two Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Markers that have been placed in the Township. The first marker was placed at the old Cumberland Valley Township Post Office in Centerville. The second marker was placed at the site of the meeting of Colonels George Washington and Henry Bouquet that took place during the French and Indian War in July of 1758. This marker dedication also had a re-enactment of the event by Living Historians and was attended by Laura Fisher, the director of the French and Indian War 250, Inc.

The Society holds meetings in the former Cumberland Valley Township School the 3rd Tuesday of every month and an Open House the 4th Sunday of every month. Some of the items on display are old photos from township residences, photos of churches in the township, and a large map from the late 1800’s with the names of the residences of Cumberland Valley Township. As time goes on, we hope to be able to compile family histories of the families that settled in Cumberland Valley Township and to display common items that were used in Cumberland Valley Township during the course of daily life.
